The hawthorn (Crataegus) is assigned to the rose family (Rosaceae) and is found in the temperate zones of the northern, but also the southern hemisphere and in the high mountains of the tropics. The hawthorn grows as a shrub or tree with hardwood, reaches a height of two to eight meters and is popular because of its white flowers. The branches are very thorny, which is why the hawthorn is also known as "hawthorn" (Middle High German "hag" for thorn bushes) and is a popular hedge plant.
