Description
L-carnitine ("Carnis" lat. Meat) is a vitamin-like chemical substance that is formed from the amino acids methionine and lysine in the liver, testes and kidneys. In our diet, L-carnitine is found in red meat. In living cells, L-Carnitine is particularly necessary for the transport of activated fatty acids to the cells and into the mitochondria, to make it accessible for beta-oxidation. The special feature: only fatty acids bound to L-carnitine chains can be transported through the cell wall of the mitochondria.
