Healthy Chlorophyll

Plants are considered healthy and luscious when it boasts bright and vibrant green leaves. Chlorophyll is the substance that is responsible for providing the plant with its green colour, being involved in photosynthesis. Additionally, chlorophyll has many positive and health-promoting effects on the human body. 

Chlorophyll (Greek: "green leaf") is responsible for plants having a green colour, and is of great importance in photosynthesis. During photosynthesis water, carbon dioxide and light energy is converted into oxygen and glucose. It is so to speak, a reverse process of human respiration.

Chlorophyll is very similar to hemoglobin, the red blood pigment of humans. Both substances are almost identical. The only difference is that the chlorophll carries a magnesium molecule at its center, whereas the structure of hemoglobin is made up of an iron molecule.

Due to this characteristic, chlorophyll is said to have many positive and health-promoting aspects. It kills germs and creates an unfavourable environment for harmful bacteria, has an antioxidant effect and bind toxins. Thus, chlorophyll is excellent at preventing against cancer. In addition, it should contribute to the formation of new blood cells, ensure improved absorption of iron and prevent a magnesium deficiency.

The following principle applies: the more chlorophyll, the better the health effects. There are several ways to increase the intake of chlorophyll. By eating vegetables, one does not only increase the amount of chlorophyll absorbed by the body, the body also benefits from any other additional nutrients, such as vitamins and phytochemicals.

The chlorophyll content is highest in green vegetables. These include nettles, kale, parsley, spinach, broccoli, green beans, peas, cucumbers and kiwis.

Low on greens? No problem! There are other options to fulfill your chlorophyll intake, such as taking capsules or drinking powders such as barley grass powder. Barley grass is an excellent chlorophyll suppliers and provides the body with other needed nutrients.
